Special shiur on 39 Melachot & the Mishkan
Shiur in Hebrew/ in Word Format |
Is Parshat Vayakhel simply a repeat of Parshat Terumah?
Indeed, the details of the Mishkan are practically identical in both Parshiot - however, their manner of presentation is quite different. To explain why, this week's shiur first considers the different purpose of each Parasha. Afterward, we will attempt to tackle the more difficult question concerning the necessity of this 'repetition'. |

From Sefer Shmot to Vayikra and Bamidbar
The dramatic, triumphant conclusion of Sefer Shmot seems to end on a 'sour note': although the Sh'china returns, Moshe Rabbeinu cannot enter the Mishkan! Did something go wrong? Was Moshe unworthy? To answer this question, this week's shiur examines a textual parallel between the conclusion of Parshat Pekudei and Parshat Mishpatim, which will help us understand the relationship between the books of Shmot, Vayikra and Bamidbar. |

The 'machazit ha'shekel' in Parshat Pekudei
What did Bnei Yisrael do with the silver collected from the very first "machazit ha'shekel"? From the commandment at the beginning of Parshat Ki-tisa
(see 30:16) it is not very clear
& the commentators offer several explanations. However, from the opening psukim in Parshat Pekudei it is clear that there was indeed a special donation of a "machazit ha'shekel" for the specific purpose of BUILDING the Mishkan. In our shiur, we undertake a careful reading of these psukim (i.e. 38:21-31) in attempt to find the deeper meaning of what this silver was used for. |

Haftarat Parshat Pekudei - I Melachim 7:51-8:21
Just as this week's Parsha describes the final stages of the construction of the Mishkan, this week's Haftara describes the final stages of the construction of the First Bet HaMikdash. In both cases, the climax centers on the Sh'china - in the form of the anan - covering the new structure, a sign that indeed His Divine Presence rests within Am Yisrael. |

The Mishkan: Before or After Chet Ha'Egel?
Had it not been for Chet Ha'Egel, would Bnei Yisrael have needed a Mishkan? Many claim that the answer to this 'philosophical' question lies in the famous 'exegetical' controversy between Rashi and Ramban concerning when God commanded Bnei Yisrael to build the Mishkan, before or after the sin of the golden calf. In this week's shiur, as we study this controversy and its ramifications, we will show how the answer to this question is not so simple. While doing so, we will also try to make some sense out of the thorny issue of "ein mukdam u'meuchar ba'Torah" (chronological order in Chumash). |
